This module introduces ESG through the lens of African economies, development priorities, and stakeholder realities. Participants explore how ESG contributes to sustainable value creation across diverse African markets, the continent’s socio-economic and environmental challenges, and the expanding role of business in driving inclusive growth, resilience and transformation. The module establishes a strong contextual foundation for ESG incentivisation strategies applied later in the course.
This module provides an in-depth understanding of governance, regulatory, and accountability frameworks shaping ESG in African organisations. Participants will explore how ESG principles are embedded within corporate governance (King IV™), integrated thinking, disclosure expectations, and sector-specific regulatory requirements. The module highlights the role of boards, remuneration committees, and executives in driving ESG outcomes while balancing compliance, risk management, and sustainable value creation.
This module equips participants with the practical skills to design ESG-linked incentive frameworks that drive sustainable performance in African organisations. Participants learn to integrate ESG priorities into short- and long-term incentives, align rewards with strategic objectives, balance ambition and achievability, and mitigate risks of greenwashing or misalignment. Emphasis is on creating culturally and contextually appropriate incentive structures that reflect African economic, social, and environmental realities.
This module focuses on the selection, measurement, verification, and management of ESG metrics in African operating environments. Participants explore how to identify material ESG indicators, design credible and auditable metrics, address data availability and quality constraints, and strengthen measurement integrity. The module emphasises practical, context-appropriate solutions to ensure ESG incentivisation frameworks are reliable, transparent, and resistant to greenwashing.
This module focuses on the practical implementation of ESG incentivisation strategies through effective stakeholder alignment, communication and change management within African organisations. Participants learn how to engage diverse stakeholders—including boards, employees, communities, regulators, investors and development finance institutions (DFIs)—to ensure ESG incentives are credible, understood, and embedded into organisational culture. The module addresses real-world implementation challenges across African markets, including trust deficits, social expectations, and institutional capacity constraints.
This capstone module integrates learning from all previous modules through in-depth African case studies and applied exercises. Participants critically analyse real-world ESG incentivisation practices across sectors and regions, assess successes and failures, and apply practical tools to their own organisational contexts. The module emphasises judgement, ethics, governance, and contextual decision-making, enabling participants to design credible, implementable ESG incentivisation strategies suitable for African markets.
